BREAKING: Vybz Kartel retrial denied: Dancehall star walks free after 13-year legal battle

By Belize Live News Staff: In a stunning turn of events just a day before Emancipation Day, the Court of Appeal of Jamaica has denied a retrial for dancehall icon Vybz Kartel and three other men accused in the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, effectively ending a 13-year legal saga that has gripped the nation.

The decision, handed down by a panel led by newly appointed President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop, cited concerns over breaches of the defendants’ right to a speedy trial, extensive pretrial publicity, and the difficulty of ensuring an impartial jury given the case’s high profile.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell and Andre St John, are now expected to be released from custody. Kahira Jones, however, will remain incarcerated due to a sentence in an unrelated case.

The prosecution, led by Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Claudette Thompson, had argued for a retrial, emphasizing the need for justice and the availability of safeguards to ensure a fair trial. However, defense attorneys John Clarke and Isat Buchanan successfully contended that a retrial would be unjust, citing the lengthy legal process, the ordeal endured by the accused, including Kartel’s health issues, and the potential for jury bias due to the extensive media coverage of the case.

The original 2014 convictions of Kartel and the other men were overturned in March 2024 by the Privy Council, the highest court of appeal for Jamaica, due to juror misconduct. This led to the current appeal process focused on whether a retrial should proceed.

The court’s decision has sparked a wave of reactions across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, with many celebrating Kartel’s impending release while others express concerns about the implications for the justice system. The case has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on Jamaican legal history and will likely continue to fuel debate for years to come.
