By Belize Live News Staff: Two individuals were rescued on Saturday night from rapidly rising waters at Rio On Pools, a popular swimming hole in Belize’s Mountain Pine Ridge. The daring operation, involving multiple emergency services agencies and local volunteers, highlighted the dangers of flash floods during the ongoing rainy season.
The two tourists found themselves stranded on a rock surface as the water levels surged unexpectedly. The response from the Technical Rescue and EMS Teams, VISART, Spanish Lookout FIRE-RESCUE-EMS, the Belize Defence Force, and volunteers from the nearby Village of San Antonio proved crucial in the successful rescue.
After several hours of meticulous work, involving ropes, tag lines, and a raft, both individuals were safely extracted from the treacherous waters and treated for mild hypothermia.
Authorities are using this incident to underscore the importance of exercising extreme caution around rivers and waterways during periods of heavy rainfall. Flash floods are a common occurrence in the region and can pose a significant risk to those caught unaware.
