By Belize Live News Staff: Caribbean leaders are rallying to address the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl, which recently tore through the region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceño joined his counterparts at a special emergency meeting to discuss immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery plans.
Belize has committed to providing both financial aid and technical expertise, pledging to send crews to help restore power to areas left in the dark. The storm, which made landfall on Carriacou Island in Grenada on Monday, has claimed at least five lives, with the death toll feared to rise as rescue workers continue their efforts.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, whose nation was also battered by the storm, has made an urgent plea for international assistance. He stressed the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island nations and called on wealthy countries to step up and provide the necessary financial support to rebuild and strengthen resilience.
The emergency meeting underscored the collective resolve of CARICOM leaders to support each other in the face of natural disasters, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events.
