By Belize Live News Staff: As Hurricane Beryl intensifies in the Caribbean, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) issued an urgent plea to livestock owners, urging them to prepare and safeguard their animals against the impending storm.
The Chief Veterinary Officer of BAHA underscored the importance of vigilance and preparedness in mitigating losses, especially given the forecast of an exceptionally active hurricane season.
The agency has provided a comprehensive checklist for animal owners to follow:
Before the storm: Thoroughly document animal numbers, secure ample food and water, relocate livestock to higher ground, and reinforce shelters.
During the storm: Prioritize human safety and remain indoors.
After the storm: Approach animals cautiously, assess injuries, provide immediate care, and address any structural damage.
BAHA emphasized the need for accurate record-keeping, including proof of ownership, to facilitate recovery efforts. They also stressed the importance of securing veterinary supplies and medications in advance.
“Planning and preparation are paramount,” said the Chief Veterinary Officer. “By taking these proactive steps, livestock owners can significantly reduce the risk of harm to their animals and ensure their well-being throughout the hurricane season.”
The agency urged owners to stay informed through official channels and to contact the Animal Health Department for further guidance.
As Hurricane Beryl continues its path, BAHA remains committed to supporting Belize’s agricultural community in safeguarding their valuable livestock assets.
