By Belize Live News Staff: In the wake of the recent state of emergency declaration, Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has sharply criticized the government’s handling of the escalating crime rate. Barrow accused the government of lacking solutions and called for changes within the police department, particularly the removal of Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.
During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Barrow highlighted the alarming 45% increase in the murder rate compared to the same period last year. He condemned Commissioner Williams for attributing recent gun violence to the Trinibad concert, dismissing it as a baseless excuse.
“The United Democratic Party has been advocating for adjustments within the Ministry of Police for years,” stated Barrow. “We firmly believe that Chester Williams has reached his expiration date. There is a complete lack of leadership and competence at the top positions within the ministry.”
Barrow went on to criticize the government’s lack of accountability and unwillingness to acknowledge shortcomings in its crime-fighting strategies. He emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders and a change in leadership to effectively address the escalating violence plaguing the nation.
The state of emergency declaration has sparked intense debate and heightened public concern over the crime situation in Belize.
