By Belize Live News Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has attributed the recent surge in gang violence in Belize to a concert held earlier this month featuring Trinidadian musician “Trinibad.” Williams expressed his strong disapproval of the concert and the artist’s music, which he believes promotes violence.
In a statement, Williams said, “Like I said, this whole spate of incidents began at Trinibad’s concert… I don’t believe that as a country, we should allow that type of music in our country, those types of entertainers in our country… Anywhere Trinibad goes and plays… there are murders, that’s their reputation.” He further emphasized the need for positive influences, suggesting that gospel music concerts would be a better alternative for the country’s youth.
The Commissioner’s comments come in the wake of a shooting that occurred after the concert, targeting Doris Grant and her common-law husband Austin Underwood. Williams reiterated his stance against allowing artists whose music promotes violence to perform in Belize, asserting that such events contribute to the already existing gang problem in the country.
Williams’ remarks have sparked debate about the role of music in influencing behavior and the responsibility of authorities in regulating entertainment events.
