By Belize Live News Staff: As a scorching heatwave grips much of the United States, the first tropical storm of the hurricane season, Alberto, has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, threatening Texas and northeastern Mexico with severe flooding, high winds, and coastal surge.
Alberto, which formed early Wednesday morning, is expected to dump 10-15 inches of rain on parts of Texas, with isolated areas potentially seeing up to 25 inches. The storm is also expected to bring strong winds and dangerous storm surge to coastal areas.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has activated the state’s emergency response system, and the Texas National Guard has been mobilized to assist with potential rescue and recovery efforts. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stock up on supplies and prepare for potential evacuations.
Meanwhile, a severe heatwave continues to blanket much of the United States, with over 70 million people under heat advisories or warnings. The heatwave is expected to last through Friday, exacerbating the potential impact of Tropical Storm Alberto.
While Belize is not directly in the path of the storm, residents are reminded to stay vigilant during hurricane season and to have a plan in place in case of severe weather.
