By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize security guard has been sentenced to three years in prison for burglarizing the primary school where he worked, highlighting the severe consequences of breaching trust and the impact of such crimes on children.
Jermaine Jason Haulze, 32, pleaded guilty to stealing $636.28 from Saint Luke’s Methodist Primary School on June 8. Surveillance footage captured him entering a classroom and taking two bags containing the money.
Haulze admitted to the crime, explaining in court that he needed the money to pay for his daughter’s school bill and an upcoming test. Despite pleas for leniency from his foster mother, who described him as a hardworking and trustworthy person, the magistrate emphasized the seriousness of the offense.
The magistrate noted that the burglary was premeditated and deliberate, and that such crimes ultimately harm the children who rely on the school. While acknowledging Haulze’s remorse and clean record, the magistrate handed down a three-year sentence, reducing it from a potential four years due to his early guilty plea.
