By Belize Live News Staff: Torrential rains have caused severe flooding and widespread disruption in Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo state in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, prompting warnings for Belizeans traveling to the popular shopping destination.
Local authorities, who had been monitoring 59 critical flood points, were forced to open shelters for residents living in vulnerable areas. Videos and images on social media show streets submerged in water and vehicles abandoned due to the rising floodwaters.
Chetumal Mayor Yensunni Martínez told local media that despite efforts to clear and clean the city’s nine canals, the amount of rain exceeded forecasts, overwhelming drainage systems in some areas.
The heavy downpour also led to power outages in several parts of the city. Authorities have urged residents to use emergency numbers (911 and 089) for reporting any serious situations.
Shelters have been set up for families forced to evacuate their homes due to the flooding. A bulletin issued by the State Coordination of Civil Protection warned citizens to exercise caution and avoid main roads until the water levels recede.
Belizeans planning to travel to Chetumal for shopping or other purposes are advised to exercise extreme caution, monitor weather conditions, and consider postponing their trips until the situation improves.
The situation remains critical as the Yucatan Peninsula continues to experience heavy rainfall.
