Internet shake-up? Starlink’s low prices put Belizean providers on edge

By Belize Live News Staff: Starlink’s arrival in Belize has sparked intense discussions, with its $29 per month internet service raising concerns about competition and accessibility. While many Belizeans welcome the prospect of faster and cheaper internet, questions remain about its impact on existing providers and whether it aligns with the conditions set by regulators.

Earlier this year, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved Starlink’s operations in Belize but restricted its availability to unserved and underserved areas, vessels, and emergencies. However, with the company now openly advertising its services at a low price, many wonder if this signals a broader expansion beyond the PUC’s initial framework.

Prime Minister John Briceño weighed in on the issue, acknowledging the benefits of improved connectivity while also cautioning against market disruptions. He pointed out that major corporations like Starlink have the financial power to enter markets aggressively, offering extremely low prices that can weaken local competition before adjusting rates later.

Briceño reassured the public that the PUC remains firm on its position—Starlink should focus on bridging connectivity gaps in rural areas rather than competing directly with established providers. He emphasized that while Belize is committed to expanding internet access, regulations must ensure that service remains sustainable and fair for all.

For now, Starlink’s growing presence in Belize is being closely monitored. Some see this as a game-changer for the country’s internet landscape, while others worry about the long-term implications. Whether Starlink will remain within the PUC’s framework or push for broader service expansion remains to be seen.
