By Belize Live News Staff: A young fisherman from Guinea Grass Village died Thursday night after his motorcycle collided with a van in Orange Walk Town.
The victim has been identified as 25 year old Lorenzo Antonio Castro.
According to preliminary police investigations, the crash happened at approximately 9:40 p.m. at the corner of Otro Benque Road and Munioz Street.
Police say a white Ford E350 van was travelling toward Trial Farm Village when its driver began making a left turn into Munioz Street.
Castro was reportedly riding a motorcycle behind the van and attempted to overtake it while the vehicle was turning.
The motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the van, causing Castro to be thrown from the motorcycle.
Emergency personnel transported him to the Northern Regional Hospital, but he later died from his injuries. A doctor pronounced him dead at 10:25 p.m.
Police say initial checks found no licence sticker or insurance documentation on the motorcycle. Investigators also reported that the motorcycle was being operated without a light at the time of the collision.
The van driver was detained as part of the investigation, and a urine specimen was obtained. Both vehicles were taken to the Orange Walk Police Station pending inspection.
Investigators are also expected to review surveillance footage and record additional statements as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
