By Aria Lightfoot: On Friday, the Government of Belize proposed a staggering $200 million in loan motions and just days before a national election is likely to be called. Why the need for more loans ?

This comes 15+ years after both a constitutional requirement and a long-standing promise to redistrict. It is remarkable that the Elections and Boundaries managed to re-register the entire population ahead of the ICJ referendum, yet somehow, redrawing 32 constituencies, or even adding a few more seems like an insurmountable challenge.

Also on Friday, Belizean media outlets were busy showcasing the heated exchanges in the House of Representatives, creating almost a cheerleading atmosphere for their social media followers, rather than fostering meaningful public discourse.

Meanwhile, the Government celebrated the cancellation of $54 million in hospital bills, a move presented as a grand gesture, though it was not requested by the public nor accompanied by a clear explanation of its broader impact, nor was a list presented of those beneficiaries of the write off.

This brings us to an important observation : The media often prides itself on being the fourth pillar of democracy. But can it truly uphold that role when most journalists lack formal training and the media companies rely heavily on government advertising to stay afloat? The advertising is controlled by those in power and so we are left reading about personal jabs vs financial impacts of the meeting.

Consider what happened when the Leader of the Opposition raised a critical question about the Auditor General’s qualifications and her connections to the ruling party. Instead of addressing the concern, the response was a fierce personal attack, mocking the Leader’s educational background, a jab that inadvertently insulted many Belizeans who may share similar educational experiences.

But why was that question so vital? Because in a country where $6.9 million land price tags go unquestioned, where loan motions pile up, and debt write-offs occur without public input, an independent and qualified Auditor General is essential. Her role is not just bureaucratic, she is the safeguard for transparency, the watchdog ensuring that government actions are ethical and accountable to the people.

Belizeans, the world is changing. The antics we brush off as political theater have real consequences. Accountability is not just a luxury, it is the foundation of a functioning democracy. And without it, the impacts are far more serious than we realize.
