Award ceremony recognizes Belizean women in animation and digital skills

By Belize Live News Staff: The Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Investment, in partnership with the Taiwan Technical Mission and the National Women’s Commission, proudly celebrated the achievements of 76 participants at the Animation Bootcamp Award Ceremony. This event, held in Northern Belize, recognized the successful completion of a transformative program aimed at equipping women and girls with foundational digital skills in graphic art and animation.

The Animation Bootcamp, hosted in Corozal, Belize City, and Orange Walk, ran from July 5 to August 16, 2024, offering both in-person and online training sessions. Participants gained essential skills to create animated short films, catering to the growing demand in the Orange Economy—industries such as film, gaming, advertising, and education that rely on creative and cultural output.

From the 76 participants, 19 entered an animation contest, showcasing their newly developed talents. Ms. Sogelyn Cabrera was awarded first place for her outstanding submission, while Ms. Ayanna Leslie and Ms. Inmaculada Sanchez shared second place. Ms. Priscilla Acosta rounded out the top three with a commendable third-place finish.

The award ceremony saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness; H.E. Ms. Lily Li-Wen Hsu, Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize; Mrs. Narda Garcia, Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister; and Mrs. Thea Garcia-Ramirez, President of the National Women’s Commission, among others. These leaders underscored the significance of the Animation Bootcamp in empowering Belizean women and fostering economic growth through the creative industries.

The Investment Policy and Compliance Unit (IPCU) of the Office of the Prime Minister expressed its gratitude to all partners and collaborators for the successful implementation of the bootcamp. Special recognition was given to the National Women’s Commission for their vital role in designing and supporting skill-building initiatives for women and girls.

By providing participants with opportunities to engage in the Orange Economy, the Animation Bootcamp exemplifies the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, creativity, and economic growth. The program’s success highlights Belize’s ongoing efforts to create new pathways for women and girls to thrive in creative industries, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
