Molotov attack on Hopkins Police Station sparks investigation

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities are investigating a chaotic incident at the Hopkins Police Station, where family members of George Brown, the man accused in the Hopkins murder, reportedly launched Molotov cocktails into the station. The incident followed Brown’s arrest for the fatal stabbing of Stephen Flores. Brown had been transported to the Dangriga Police Station for his safety after the commotion.

According to reports, tensions flared at the scene of the crime as relatives of the victim, Flores, allegedly threw rocks at officers before Brown was taken into custody. Following his detention, the situation escalated further at the Hopkins Police Station when Molotov cocktails were hurled into the cell block, igniting flames inside. Fortunately, officers were able to extinguish the fire and transport Brown to safety. Brown reportedly suffered minor smoke inhalation but was otherwise unharmed.

The altercation has raised questions about the handling of the case, particularly regarding evidence collection. Chester Williams, the Commissioner of Police, acknowledged the complexities of the situation but dismissed concerns about mishandling evidence, emphasizing the strength of the witness statements and other evidence gathered.

Commissioner Williams explained, “While gloves would have been ideal in this situation, I don’t believe the absence of gloves will impact the case. Witness accounts and other evidence clearly establish what occurred.”

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident at the Hopkins Police Station, as well as the murder of Stephen Flores. Further updates are expected as the case develops.
