By Belize Live News Staff: In the first nine days of 2025, three murders have already shaken Belize, prompting a statement from Commissioner of Police Chester Williams. The victims include fisherman Godfrey Hyde, Belizean-American George Brown, and Giovanni Ramirez, a key witness in the case against former attorney Oscar Selgado.
Speaking to the media, Commissioner Williams expressed regret over the inability to prevent these tragedies but emphasized that police efforts alone cannot always avert violent incidents. He urged the public to exercise patience and resolve conflicts through non-violent means. “While we’re at three murders so far this year, I wouldn’t say it’s due to a lack of policing efforts,” he remarked, adding that certain situations escalate beyond immediate police control.
The Commissioner highlighted the role of interventions like the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) and police community outreach programs in mitigating violence. He reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the public to reduce crime and foster peaceful conflict resolution.
