Guatemalan gunboat stuck on Belize Barrier Reef, raising alarms

By Belize Live News Staff: A Guatemalan gunboat has reportedly run aground on a section of the Belize Barrier Reef near the Sapodilla Cayes, raising serious environmental and territorial concerns.

The circumstances surrounding how the vessel ended up in Belizean waters remain unclear. Authorities have yet to determine the extent of the damage caused to the reef, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.

The incident has sparked immediate concern, as a foreign military vessel has no jurisdiction to be within Belizean territorial waters. The presence of the Guatemalan gunboat has also amplified longstanding tensions between the two countries, particularly in maritime areas.

Photos circulating on social media, courtesy of PGTV, show the vessel grounded on the reef. Environmentalists have expressed alarm over the potential ecological harm, as the Belize Barrier Reef is one of the largest and most diverse reef systems in the world, supporting vital marine life and Belize’s tourism industry.

Officials are expected to conduct an investigation to assess the damage and determine how the vessel entered Belize’s waters.

Further updates are anticipated as the situation develops.
