By Belize Live News Staff: The family of Gilbert Tec Jr., a top-performing student from Ocean Academy, has announced a moment of hope in his recovery after he briefly awakened from a coma earlier this week following a severe road traffic accident.
Tec, who sustained critical injuries during the accident on the Philip Goldson Highway, opened his eyes two nights ago before slipping back into unconsciousness, his family said. Despite the brief moment of responsiveness, the 18-year-old has shown encouraging signs of recovery, including upper body movements.
However, Tec’s condition remains critical, with doctors reporting a spinal injury that could leave him unable to walk. His family continues to hold on to hope for his recovery, saying they are “praying for the best outcome.”
The accident, which occurred while Tec and his classmates were traveling, resulted in the death of one student and injuries to several others. Tec, a high-achieving honor roll student who was recently accepted to a U.S. university, has become a symbol of resilience for the community.
His family has requested privacy as they focus on his recovery and has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support from across Belize.
