San Pedro woman flees abusive ex-husband, jumps into sea to survive

By Belize Live News Staff: A 30-year-old woman escaped a violent abduction by her ex-husband early Saturday morning, jumping off a jet ski and swimming to safety near the island of Caye Caulker, police said.

The victim was at home in San Pedro when her ex-husband allegedly broke in around 2:30 a.m., assaulted her, and forced her onto a jet ski at knifepoint.

According to police, she jumped into the sea during the ride and swam to shore, where she sought help. She was then taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City and is in stable condition.

The ex-husband remains at large, last seen near Caye Caulker, police said. The victim’s three children, who were at home during the incident, were unharmed.

An investigation is ongoing.
