By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize National Cricket Association has issued a sharp response to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams’ recent statement suggesting that the violent feud between the Double Head Cabbage and Lemonal communities was sparked by a cricket rivalry. Following a string of violent incidents that left two dead and two others injured, Commissioner Williams commented that “one of the most salient issues is that this emanated from cricket.”
The Cricket Association, however, firmly disagrees. In a statement, the association refuted any link between cricket and the violence, stressing that “the feud is absolutely not caused by cricket.” They warned that such comments could damage the sport’s reputation and potentially lead to loss of support from sponsors, fans, and affiliates. The association called on Commissioner Williams to retract his statement, emphasizing that the individuals involved in the feud are not in conflict over cricket.
The association awaits a response, hoping the Commissioner will clarify his comments to prevent any misunderstanding about the role of cricket in the Belize River Valley.
