Belize-born composer Errollyn Wallen makes history as first black woman appointed Master of the King's Music

By Belize Live News Staff: King Charles III has appointed Belize-born composer Errollyn Wallen as the Master of the King’s Music, making her the first Black woman to hold this prestigious position.

Wallen’s appointment recognizes her significant contributions to the music world, including compositions for the BBC Proms, the 2012 Paralympic Games, and Queen Elizabeth II’s jubilees. As Master of the King’s Music, she will be responsible for composing music for important royal occasions such as weddings, jubilees, and coronations.

Wallen’s career boasts 22 operas and a vast collection of orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. She was the first Black woman to have her work featured in the BBC Proms and the first woman to receive an Ivor Novello award for Classical Music.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Wallen stated, “I am thrilled to accept this royal appointment … I look forward to championing music and music-making for all.”

Born in Belize in 1958, Wallen moved to the UK with her parents at a young age. Her lifelong passion for music led her to pursue formal training and diverse musical experiences.

Wallen’s appointment is a source of immense pride for Belizeans, highlighting the exceptional talent and achievements of one of their own on the global stage. Her success challenges preconceptions and paves the way for future generations of musicians.
