Taiwanese youth ambassadors to strengthen ties with Belize and Guatemala

By Belize Live News Staff: A group of 50 Taiwanese youth ambassadors, fresh from their two-week training in Taipei, are set to embark on a 12-day diplomatic mission to Belize and Guatemala next week. This initiative is part of the annual International Youth Ambassadors Exchange Program organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, during a farewell ceremony, encouraged these young envoys to raise awareness of Taiwan and foster stronger bilateral relations with the two Central American allies.

The program, now in its 15th year, has trained over 1,800 young Taiwanese nationals. This year’s ambassadors, aged between 18 and 35, were selected based on their proficiency in English or Spanish, academic achievements, and artistic talents. They will engage in a diverse range of activities, including seminars, volunteer work, and cultural exchanges.

The visit is seen as an opportunity to deepen the bonds between Taiwan and its allies, highlighting the island nation’s role on the international stage. The ambassadors will spend time in Belize from August 21st to 25th and then in Guatemala from August 25th to 29th.

Ambassadors from both Belize and Guatemala expressed their enthusiasm for the program. Candice Augusta Pitts, Belize’s ambassador to Taiwan, emphasized the importance of involving young people in diplomacy, equipping them with the necessary skills to navigate global affairs.

Oscar Adolfo Padilla Lam, Guatemala’s ambassador to Taiwan, highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries, which dates back to 1933. He reaffirmed Guatemala’s unwavering support for Taiwan’s participation in the international community.

The initiative comes at a time when Taiwan is actively seeking to bolster its diplomatic ties amidst increasing pressure from China. The youth ambassadors’ visit underscores the island nation’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections with its allies and promoting its presence on the world stage.
