By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is hosting the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) and Regional Consultation Group on Migration (RCGM) midterm meeting, marking the first time the country has led this regional initiative. The conference, themed “A Better World with Respect for Human Rights and Dignity,” brings together 11 member states from Central America, along with the U.S. and Canada, and observer organizations providing technical and financial support.
“This is a platform for sharing best practices,” said Shanika Norales, Port Commander at the Ministry of Immigration, Border Management, and Immigration Services. “Belize can learn from the experiences of other countries in the region, and we can also share our own insights to help others make informed decisions about migration issues.”
Key topics of discussion include irregular migration, disaster displacement, and child labor. Norales emphasized the importance of addressing irregular migration, a significant concern in the region. She also highlighted the emerging issue of disaster displacement, a new phenomenon in immigration that forces people to leave their homes due to natural disasters.
The conference provides an opportunity for member states to collaborate on solutions to these challenges. By sharing information and best practices, countries can work together to create a more humane and effective approach to migration management.
