By Belize Live News Staff: An afternoon of housework ended in violence for a woman in San Jose Village, Orange Walk District, and her husband is now before the courts charged with wounding.
The Belize Police Department reports that the 58-year-old woman made her report at the Trial Farm Police Sub Station on Thursday, July 9, 2026. She stated that at about 4:00 p.m. that day, she was washing dishes at home when her husband arrived, seemingly intoxicated, and began verbally abusing her.
Hoping to defuse the situation, she said, she withdrew to the yard and sat beneath a tree. But according to her report, he pursued her there and the attack began, a slap to the face, her hair seized, punches to her head, a shove to the ground, and kicks to her back as she cried out for help.
Her calls were answered. Family members arrived, and she managed to reach the safety of a relative’s house next door before going to police, where she requested court action.
Officers took her statement and issued medico-legal forms, and a doctor certified her injuries as wounding, a classification that reflects the seriousness of the harm.
The following day, Friday, July 10, police obtained a warrant and formally charged 48-year-old Jaime Adon Escarraga, a labourer of San Jose Village, with wounding.
It is worth noting that Escarraga, like anyone facing a charge, is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty before the court.
Anyone living with domestic violence is encouraged to seek help through the police or a trusted support service. Reaching out can be the first step to safety.
