By Belize Live News Staff: The countdown is officially on for Belize’s sugar industry.
After months of harvesting, hauling, and processing cane, industry stakeholders have agreed to officially bring the 2026 sugar crop season to a close on Sunday, June 21 at 6:00 p.m.
The decision was reached following discussions between Belize Sugar Industries (BSI), the Sugar Cane Production Committee (SCPC), and the country’s four cane farmers associations.
With only days remaining, farmers are now focused on getting as much cane as possible to the mill before operations shut down for the season.
Industry officials say the decision was based on current cane availability, factory delivery rates, and weather conditions expected over the coming days.
The final stretch of the crop is always one of the busiest periods of the season, with truckers, harvesters, and factory workers working against the clock to complete deliveries before the cutoff time.
Once the gates close on June 21, the Tower Hill factory will stop accepting cane and attention will begin shifting toward preparations for next year’s crop.
For thousands of families across northern Belize, the end of the crop season marks the conclusion of months of hard work and one of the country’s most important agricultural activities.
