By Belize Live News Staff: The controversy surrounding government contracts and family connections continues to generate discussion, but Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira says he was never involved in any procurement decisions that may have benefited members of his family.
Speaking publicly on the issue, Mira explained that government tenders follow an established process managed through procurement committees and not by ministers. He said he has never sat on a procurement committee and has never attempted to influence one.
According to Mira, tenders are publicly advertised and open to any qualified applicant. He maintained that any contracts awarded to relatives would have gone through the same process available to other Belizeans seeking government work.
The minister also addressed concerns about reports suggesting that some payments may have been structured below certain approval thresholds. While acknowledging that such reports naturally raise questions, Mira said he was not aware of any wrongdoing and could not say whether any laws had been broken.
The issue has sparked debate about transparency and accountability in government procurement, with some calling for greater oversight and disclosure.
Mira said the situation serves as a learning experience and reiterated that his focus remains on carrying out his responsibilities as Minister of Home Affairs rather than matters involving procurement or contract approvals.
