By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed that Jose Mai has stepped down as Minister of Agriculture after medical concerns stemming from a previous farm accident intensified.
Mai’s health issues began after a fall from a horse last year, leaving him with chronic back pain that has increasingly affected his ability to function in his role. Medical specialists have now recommended back surgery, which will require significant time for recovery.
“Minister Mai made the decision based on his health. Surgery and the healing process will keep him away for a while,” the Prime Minister said.
With Mai stepping down, Minister Rodwell Ferguson has now been appointed to lead the Ministry of Agriculture, ensuring continuity of operations during Mai’s extended recovery period.
Mai reportedly concluded that it would be more practical for the ministry to transition to new leadership rather than operate with prolonged gaps during his absence.
More updates will be provided as information is released.
