By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Police Department is in mourning following the passing of Police Constable Karen August, who died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after succumbing to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash.
The accident occurred on Sunday, September 7, along the George Price Highway near Succotz Village. PC August was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by fellow officer PC Kurlyn Hamilton when they were struck by a vehicle. Hamilton escaped with minor injuries, but August was left critically hurt.
After nearly a week of fighting for her life in the ICU, PC August passed away shortly before 3 p.m. today. She was the mother of two children, ages 4 and 7, and her death has devastated her family and colleagues alike.
Five days after the crash, police charged 31-year-old Dijon McNab, a restaurant owner, in connection with the incident. McNab faces several charges, including negligent grievous harm, negligent wounding, and driving without due care and attention. He was also charged with failing to stop, failing to render aid, and failing to report an accident. He was released on $5,000 bail and two sureties of the same amount.
