By Belize Live News Staff: Nineteen Belizeans were honored at Wednesday night’s Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony, recognizing their lasting contributions to the country across diverse areas of service. Four awards were given posthumously, with 12 recipients receiving Meritorious Service Awards and two being honored with the Order of Distinction.
Anthony Mahler, speaking about Edison “Stone Jam” Hyde, praised his decades-long influence on Belize’s music scene and entertainment culture. Hyde was described as a trailblazer who set trends and inspired generations through his artistry and leadership.
Jaime Usher was commended for her contributions to STEM education, with Matthew Douglas describing her as a courageous and visionary leader who is shaping the future for Belize’s youth in science and technology.
Dr. Cynthia Gillett Thompson’s impact on the development of teacher education in Belize was highlighted by Cecelia Ramirez Smith, who described her as a mentor and pioneer. Dr. Thompson was instrumental in creating the Faculty of Education at the University of Belize and laying the foundation for teacher training in the country.
Rene Villanueva Sr. reflected on the late Edison Seferino Coleman, recalling his distinct character and national influence as a broadcaster. Coleman’s weekly programs connected Belizeans from all walks of life, cementing his legacy as a cultural icon.
The night served as a celebration of service, dedication, and patriotism, highlighting the diverse ways Belizeans have shaped the nation’s cultural, educational, and social fabric.
