By Belize Live News Staff: Today, Monday, June 30th, 2025 – The National Assembly of Belize is joining the global community in commemorating the International Day of Parliamentarism, a day that underscores the vital role parliaments play in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and voicing the will of the people.
The observance, first proclaimed by the United Nations in 2018, is held annually on June 30 to mark the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889. The day celebrates the global achievements of parliaments and recognizes their evolving role in addressing critical global issues such as climate change, inequality, and peacebuilding.
Parliaments are essential pillars of democratic governance, responsible for enacting laws, overseeing executive actions, and approving national budgets. They are also key venues where national debates take place and the public’s diverse perspectives are represented.
This year’s theme, “From the top to the foundation, everyone has a part to play. Together, we are Parliament,” highlights inclusivity and collective responsibility. The National Assembly of Belize reaffirms its dedication to democratic values, transparency, and meaningful citizen engagement—noting that the success of parliament depends not only on elected officials but also on the hardworking staff and partners who contribute daily to its operations.
In observance of this day, the National Assembly is holding internal events to promote wellness, service recognition, and unity among staff members.
All Belizeans are encouraged to reflect on the importance of parliamentary institutions and to remain engaged in the democratic process, shaping the future of the nation through informed civic participation.
