Belize Airports Authority suspends payments on security contracts pending investigation

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has announced the immediate suspension of payments under two security contracts awarded by the previous board of directors, citing concerns over procurement practices and compliance.

In a statement issued today following a board meeting, the newly appointed BAA Board of Directors revealed that contracts issued to ISecurity and Four Diamond are now under review. The board says it is conducting a thorough investigation into the procurement processes and due diligence protocols used by the former administration.

Pending the outcome of this review and a legal opinion on the validity of the contracts, the BAA has halted all payments to the companies involved.

The new Chair of the Authority emphasized the BAA’s commitment to good governance, stating that there are signs that the “proper procedures may not have been observed” when awarding the security contracts. The board has acted swiftly to ensure that all future contracts align with Belizean law and best practices.

As part of its reform efforts, the BAA announced it will launch a transparent retendering process to secure qualified security providers for the country’s aerodromes. The authority also reassured the public that airport security remains a top priority and that day-to-day operations will not be disrupted during the transition.

The BAA said it will continue to update the public as the retendering process progresses, and reaffirmed its commitment to operating with integrity and efficiency in service to the people of Belize.
