By Belize Live News Staff: A personal exchange between two senators on Thursday led to a suspension of the Senate.
Lead Opposition Senator Sheena Pitts was heard on the microphone calling Government Senator Hector Guerra “slow.” Guerra responded by saying the only thing slow was Pitts’ sense of style.
Pitts reclaimed her time and asked Guerra to retract his remark with an apology.
“I never did stood here and on the mic and on the record offend Standing Order 64 the way he did. And so I call for an apology on the record and a retraction of the statement,” she said.
Senate President Carolyn Sandiford put the question to Guerra, who said he was not prepared to retract, insisting that respect must go both ways.
Pitts fired back, “Now it is open season.”
NGO Senator Janelle Chanona later brought a moment of levity to the chamber.
“Comments were made during one of the earlier interventions regarding style, and since I am wearing pink, I would like to know if that applies to me,” she said.
The Senate was meeting to debate a US$34 million loan for repairs to the George Price Highway.
