By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s tourism leaders say a new nonstop link to Europe could open the door to real growth from the European market.
Discover Airlines has confirmed it will fly twice weekly from Frankfurt to Belize City via San José, Costa Rica, starting in December 2027, with direct return flights from Belize to Frankfurt on its new Airbus A350.
Director of Tourism Evan Tillett credited years of behind the scenes work for securing the service and said it reflects confidence in Belize as a destination. He described the lack of European air access as the “Achilles’ heel for real growth from Europe.”
With the route confirmed, Tillett said the focus now turns to marketing, with the public and private sectors working together to grow arrivals and further diversify the European market.
The Belize Tourism Board has committed about US$2 million over three years as a revenue guarantee for the route, which is projected to bring an economic impact of US$5 million to US$10 million per season.
For European travellers, the service means fewer connections and an easier path to Belize’s reef, rainforest and ancient Maya sites from late 2027.
