By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is brushing aside reports that some members of his Cabinet are working to stop him from running again.
When a reporter asked about claims that factions within Cabinet were opposed to a third Briceño term, the Prime Minister flatly denied it.
“Let me start with the obvious then: the Cabinet is united, our government is united, our party is united,” Briceño said.
Pressed again on whether there was any move within Cabinet to keep him from running in 2030, he responded: “Well, I don’t know where you get that from, but I can tell you there is no such thing.”
The denial comes after weeks of talk about tension in the party’s top ranks. At a recent PUP National Party Council meeting, ministers Anthony Mahler and Cordel Hyde made remarks some saw as subtle jabs, and the Prime Minister has since carried out a major Cabinet reshuffle.
Former Prime Minister Dean Barrow has also said the current administration is experiencing a level of fracturing not seen in a long time.
Briceño, however, maintains that the PUP is solidly behind him as he prepares to lead the party into the next general election.
