By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has officially welcomed a new Contractor General, a position that plays a key role in ensuring transparency and fairness in the awarding of government contracts.
Maria Arthurs was sworn in this week before Governor-General H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam and will serve a three-year term overseeing the monitoring of public contracts and procurement activities.
The Office of the Contractor General is tasked with helping ensure that government projects are awarded fairly, carried out according to the law, and managed in the public’s best interest. The office also serves as an important safeguard against potential irregularities in the use of public funds.
Arthurs assumes the role at a time when issues surrounding government contracts, procurement practices, and public accountability continue to attract significant public attention.
Her responsibilities will include reviewing the award and implementation of public contracts and helping ensure that procurement processes are conducted on merit and without favoritism.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Belize House, where Arthurs took the oath of office before the Governor-General.
Good governance advocates have long emphasized the importance of strong oversight institutions in maintaining public trust and protecting taxpayer resources.
With her appointment now official, Arthurs takes on a position that many consider critical to promoting transparency, accountability, and confidence in Belize’s public sector.
As the country continues efforts to strengthen oversight and good governance practices, the work of the Contractor General’s Office is expected to remain under close public scrutiny.
