Possible poisoning incident leaves two children hospitalized in Orange Walk

By Belize Live News Staff: A frightening incident in August Pine Ridge Village, Orange Walk has left two children hospitalized after they reportedly consumed food believed to be contaminated with a toxic substance.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, March 22, 2026, when the minors were rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH) after experiencing alarming symptoms.

Initial reports indicate that the children were given sweet bread that had been taken from a residence in the village. It was later discovered that the bread contained a white powdery substance suspected to be poison.

Shortly after eating the bread, one of the children began to experience difficulty breathing, while the other reported dizziness after taking a bite and spitting it out. Their condition prompted an urgent trip to the hospital, where they were immediately treated by medical staff.

Authorities confirmed that the substance involved has not yet been identified. However, both children are said to be in stable condition and remain under observation as a precaution.

Police have since launched an investigation to determine how the suspected toxic substance came to be on the food and whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over the incident, as questions remain about the source of the contamination and the potential risk to others.

The investigation is ongoing.
