Sergeant and QRT officer to appear in court on extortion charges

By Belize Live News Staff: Two members of the Belize Police Department are due in court today after being arrested and charged with extortion.

Sergeant Branston Peters and PC Aguilar, both based in Orange Walk, are set to be arraigned in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

PC Aguilar is assigned to the Quick Response Team.

Police have not yet released details of what led to the charges.

The case comes as the Police Department faces public scrutiny on several fronts, and new Minister of National Security Michel Chebat has pledged accountability and professionalism within the force.

Both officers are entitled to the presumption of innocence.

This is a developing story.
