Evangelical leaders say BTL–SMART deal crosses moral and national lines

By Belize Live News Staff: The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) is issuing a firm moral warning against the proposed acquisition of Speednet (SMART) by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), saying the move threatens competition, transparency, and the public good.

In a press release dated January 26, 2026, NEAB says it cannot support the transaction at this time or under any conditions, citing concerns that go beyond economics and into governance and ethical responsibility.

NEAB argues that the acquisition would result in a telecommunications monopoly, a scenario it describes as fundamentally harmful to Belizean consumers and businesses. According to the association, monopolies weaken regulatory enforcement, reduce consumer choice, and almost always lead to increased costs for users.

“Competition keeps the market pure,” NEAB states, warning that higher rates and reduced accountability would be predictable outcomes if the deal proceeds.

Beyond market concerns, NEAB raises alarm over what it describes as serious conflicts of interest involving political insiders and decision-makers connected to the transaction. The association questions how decisions of this magnitude can be made without clear separation between public duty and private benefit.

The faith-based organization emphasizes that price reductions, independent valuations, or expanded consultations would not change its stance, insisting that monopoly control itself is unacceptable regardless of conditions.

NEAB also stresses that while it works alongside government as a social partner, partnership does not mean silence. The association says there are moments when speaking out is necessary, even when the message is uncomfortable.

“We must speak up,” the statement reads, framing the issue as one of stewardship, accountability, and national responsibility.

NEAB concludes by reaffirming its commitment to defending the interests of Belizean families, workers, and consumers, while continuing to pray for national leadership and direction.

The statement is signed by Rev. Santie Valencia, President of the National Evangelical Association of Belize, along with the organization’s National Executive Team.
