By Belize Live News Staff: A Belizean woman is now in the custody of US immigration officials, according to a social media post from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The post, from the agency’s New Orleans field office, said ICE had arrested Dawn Delone Higinio, describing her as a Belizean who was in the United States illegally. According to ICE, her record includes arrests for felony forgery, felony larceny, and felony fraud involving the illegal use of credit cards.
What the post does not say is whether those arrests led to any convictions. The distinction matters, because an arrest reflects an allegation rather than a finding of guilt. Higinio, like anyone in her position, is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
Her detention comes amid a broader push by US authorities to identify and deport noncitizens, with ICE field offices frequently announcing such arrests on social media. That effort has swept up nationals from across the region, and Belizeans living in the United States, particularly those without secure immigration status, have not been exempt.
For now, little else is known publicly about Higinio’s circumstances or what lies ahead in her case. Individuals taken into ICE custody are generally held while their cases move through the immigration system, a process that can end in removal from the United States.
The case is another example of the realities facing Belizeans and other migrants in the current US immigration environment, where enforcement has stepped up considerably.
