High river levels keep ATM Cave and nearby archaeological sites closed

High river levels keep ATM Cave and nearby archaeological sites closed

By Belize Live News Staff: Several major archaeological sites in western Belize have been temporarily closed due to elevated river conditions, according to an early morning advisory issued by the Institute of Archaeology.

At 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 28, officials confirmed that Xunantunich and its ferry crossing are closed after rising river levels made access unsafe.

The popular Nohoch Che’en, Actun Tunichil Muknal, and Barton Creek Archaeological Reserves also remain closed due to unsafe river conditions affecting access to the sites.

The Institute of Archaeology says the decision was made in the interest of public safety, as elevated river levels pose risks to visitors, tour guides, and staff.

All other archaeological reserves across Belize remain open for visitation, while authorities continue to monitor conditions and will issue an update at 8:00 a.m.
