Tourism experts: No McDonald’s in Belize, and that’s exactly how it should be

Tourism officials say Belize’s absence of global fast-food franchises is intentional and beneficial, reinforcing the country’s brand as an authentic, culturally rich destination. Speaking during Wednesday’s BTB tourism briefing, Director Evan Tillett highlighted that visitors don’t come to Belize looking for McDonald’s or Burger King; they come for Belizean flavor, hospitality, and uniqueness.

Tillett explained that the country’s tourism model differs from mass-tourism destinations that rely on large commercial brands. Belize instead focuses on community-based tourism, local eateries, and distinctive experiences that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Allowing major franchises to enter, he noted, could dilute the very charm that sets Belize apart.

He added that the country’s culinary landscape, rooted in Garifuna, Maya, Mestizo, Creole, and East Indian traditions, is one of Belize’s strongest assets. Protecting that identity aligns with the BTB’s long-term marketing strategy of promoting Belize as an authentic, boutique-style destination.

Tourism officials say Belize is better off showcasing its own flavors rather than importing global fast-food brands, reaffirming that Belizeans and visitors alike benefit from the country’s strong cultural identity.
