Stranded dolphin reported in Hopkins Village; Officials respond

By Belize Live News Staff: The Hopkins Village Council has extended its gratitude to the community for its prompt cooperation after a deceased dolphin washed ashore this morning. Villagers quickly reported the sighting to officials, enabling the Belize Marine Mammal Stranding Network to deploy responders immediately.

Marine responder Shamika Martinez was on site to conduct the required assessment and documentation. The Village Council noted that the vigilance and quick reporting from residents played a critical role in ensuring the incident was handled according to established marine protocol.

The Village Council used the opportunity to urge the public to continue reporting all incidents of stranded marine life, emphasizing that community participation is vital for identifying potential threats and protecting Belize’s marine ecosystem.

In the meantime, the Village Council’s advisory remains in effect, asking residents to avoid touching or interfering with the dolphin while authorities determine the safest and most appropriate disposal method.
