Four detained for illegal logging in Maya Forest Corridor

By Belize Live News Staff: The Forest Department has confirmed the arrest of four individuals following an illegal logging operation inside the Maya Forest Corridor, a vital conservation zone in Belize.

According to the Department, the discovery was made by Wildlife Conservation Society rangers on November 2, who found the group in possession of more than 190 pieces of lumber, including mahogany and salmwood, without proper authorization.

The suspects, all residents of Cotton Tree Village, were charged under Section 19 of the Forest Act for the unlawful possession of forest produce. Two vehicles used in the operation were also confiscated and remain impounded.

The Forest Department praised the Belize Police Department, particularly officers from the Mahogany Heights and Hattieville Police Stations, for their swift and coordinated response. Officials reminded the public that illegal logging is a serious offense that threatens Belize’s natural resources and the livelihoods of those who depend on sustainable forest use.

Citizens are urged to report any suspicious or illegal forest activity to the Forest Department Hotline at 610-1524. The Department emphasized that community cooperation is key to protecting Belize’s forests for future generations.
