By Belize Live News Staff: The Department of the Environment (DOE) has confirmed that it is actively investigating reports of a fuel odor and visible sheen in the Placencia Lagoon area.
In a statement released today, the DOE said it has received public concern about the matter and is conducting a thorough inspection to identify the source of the contamination.
According to the DOE, the service station in question has completed an internal review of its fuel inventory, comparing fuel received to fuel sold. So far, there is no indication of product loss, but investigations are continuing to verify this fully.
As part of the process, underground sumps and fuel lines are being tested for potential leaks using pressurization methods. The DOE reported that no leaks have been detected to date. Additional checks are being carried out in surrounding areas to rule out other possible sources of contamination.
The DOE noted that the thin, multicolored sheen seen on the lagoon typically suggests the presence of refined fuel with a low viscosity and high evaporation rate, consistent with the strong hydrocarbon odor that was reported.
The DOE, in collaboration with the Belize National Fire Service, is continuing its investigation to determine the exact source of the sheen and odor.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and environmental protection, assuring residents that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
