By Belize Live News Staff: Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton says another increase in the price of diesel is placing additional pressure on Belizean households and businesses already struggling with the cost of living.
Panton issued a strongly worded statement following the latest adjustment in diesel prices at midnight.
She argued that higher fuel prices have consequences far beyond motorists filling their tanks because transportation and energy costs eventually affect businesses and consumers throughout the economy.
Panton pointed specifically to Belize’s productive sector, tourism businesses, entrepreneurs and transportation providers as areas she believes are already under significant pressure.
She said Belizeans “cannot continue to absorb increase after increase.”
The Opposition Leader also called on the Government to explain what practical measures it intends to implement to cushion the effects of rising fuel and energy costs.
Panton argued that after 45 years of independence, working families should not continue to be squeezed from multiple directions while the cost of living rises.
“The backs of Belize’s working class and taxpayers are about to break,” she said.
Panton ended her statement by asking, “How much more are Belizeans expected to bear?”
