By Belize Live News Staff: The recent femicide in San Felipe Village, Orange Walk, that claimed the lives of a mother and her young son has prompted government agencies to renew their call for urgent national action to end gender-based violence in Belize.
In a joint statement, the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, the Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, and the National Women’s Commission expressed sorrow and outrage over the tragedy, calling it “an appalling act of femicide.”
The agencies said the incident is a painful reminder of the persistent danger faced by women and children and emphasized that violence within homes and communities can no longer be accepted or ignored. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening laws, expanding support services, and continuing advocacy for the formal recognition of femicide in Belizean law.
The statement urged all Belizeans, from community leaders and teachers to faith-based groups and youth organizations to help build a culture of zero tolerance for violence and to stand up for those in danger.
Authorities reminded the public that help is available through the Ministry’s support services and the nearest police station, urging victims of abuse not to suffer in silence.
