Joint Union negotiators reject key parts of government offer, await official response

By Belize Live News Staff: The Joint Unions’ Negotiating Team (JUNT) is raising serious concerns about what it calls misleading public statements made by members of the Government Negotiating Team, specifically in relation to the ongoing salary adjustment and increment restoration negotiations.

In a press release issued today, JUNT confirmed that after receiving the Government’s official proposal dated May 21, 2025, and conducting consultations with its membership, it officially submitted its collective rejection of Points #4 and #5 of that offer on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The disputed points reportedly involve the government’s preferred method of salary adjustments and increment payments.

The Joint Team stated that contrary to claims made by Ministers Francis Fonseca and Henry Charles Usher in the media on Wednesday, no new response or counteroffer has been received by JUNT from the Government up to today, Thursday, June 5.

JUNT emphasized that the Government has not yet formally responded to the union’s written rejection or offered any alternative proposal. Union leaders say they are still waiting for a follow-up from the Government Negotiating Team on what they describe as “the most pressing matter” for their membership.

The standoff signals continued tension between public sector unions and the administration, especially as teachers and other public officers remain vocal about salary issues and stalled adjustments.
