On February 22, staff at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro discovered the bodies of Kaoutar Naqqad, 23; Imane Mallah, 24; and Wafae El Arar, 26. Initial reports from Belizean officials indicated that the women died from “acute pulmonary edema,” but the exact cause remains undetermined.
The families have voiced concerns over the lack of information and the delay in toxicology reports. They are particularly alarmed by reports suggesting that carbon monoxide poisoning may have been a factor, especially given the resort’s temporary closure earlier this month. The families are calling for transparency from both the resort’s management and Belizean officials to ensure the safety of future guests and to prevent similar incidents.
In Massachusetts, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death. Results are pending and are expected within the standard 90-day timeframe.
