Expired everything: rider charged on three counts in Orange Walk

Insurance

By Belize Live News Staff: The licence: expired. The insurance: dead since January. The motorcycle’s registration: nowhere to be found. When police stopped a rider on San Ignacio Street on Friday morning, the paperwork check came up empty three times over, and the charges came in a matching set.

The Belize Police Department reports that officers on mobile patrol spotted the blue and black motorcycle at about 7:40 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, heading toward Benque Viejo Street, and signalled the rider in. He stopped without fuss, and the unravelling began with a single question about his driver’s licence. Expired, he admitted.

The rider was identified as Darwin Moreno, 20, a construction worker of Chan Pine Ridge Village. The motorcycle told the rest of the story: insurance lapsed since January 21, and no vehicle licence at all. Asked if any updated documents existed, Moreno’s answer was at least honest: “No, sir.”

By 8:30 a.m., the morning had produced a formal arrest and three charges, riding without third-party risk insurance, riding an unlicensed motorcycle, and riding without a valid driver’s licence. He met the final caution with silence, and the expired insurance disc went into evidence.

Moreno, as with anyone charged, is presumed innocent unless and until the court says otherwise.

If the story feels familiar, it is. A rider in Belmopan collected the identical three charges at a checkpoint days ago, and between the enforcement stops, the crashes, and the drive-by coverage, the motorcycle has owned this month’s road news. The lesson never changes price: the paperwork costs money, but riding without it costs more, and on the morning the stop comes, “No, sir” is not a defence.
