By Belize Live News Staff: UDP Leader Tracy Panton says Belize cannot maintain public confidence in its justice system if similar offences are handled differently depending on who is involved.
In a strongly worded statement, the Opposition Leader called for institutions that apply the law fairly and consistently, without political interference, favoritism or special treatment.
Panton warned that unequal treatment damages public trust and raises questions about whether Belizeans can expect the same protections regardless of their background or influence.
She also highlighted the importance of protecting individuals who report sexual violence, particularly women and children.
According to Panton, every complainant deserves dignity, access to support services and assurance that allegations will be considered fairly.
She stressed that the influence or position of an accused person should never determine how a complaint is handled.
The UDP leader also argued that leadership requires principled decisions, even when those decisions are politically or personally difficult.
Panton said political loyalties, personal relationships and social status should not influence the standards applied by public institutions.
Her comments focused on the broader principles of equal justice and institutional accountability rather than identifying any specific criminal investigation.
She ended with a reminder that Belize’s laws must apply equally to everyone and called on citizens to remain alert to issues affecting fairness and justice.
