By Belize Live News Staff: A fishing trip with friends turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when 28-year-old Shawn Toledano drowned at Honey Camp Lagoon. Toledano, who left home on Monday evening to fish with his brother-in-law and friends, never returned.
According to reports, his companions noticed that he was missing and began searching for him. After a frantic search, they found his body submerged and unresponsive north of the Honey Camp Lagoon Road.
His mother, Odelia Toledano, spoke of her devastation, revealing that she had begged her son not to go fishing that evening. “I told him not to go, but he said he was going with his brother-in-law and others,” she recounted, her voice heavy with sorrow.
She recalled feeling an uneasy sensation hours before the tragedy. “Around five, I felt a strong pain in my chest and then in my shoulder. I didn’t know why until my other son came and told me, ‘Mom, you look very sad.’”
As the evening progressed, her anxiety grew. She was still unaware of what had happened when her daughter arrived home in tears. “She wasn’t calling for me, she didn’t want to tell me anything,” Toledano said. It wasn’t until later that night that the heartbreaking news was confirmed—her son had drowned.
Shawn Toledano was described as a kind and loving son, always thinking of his mother. “He would always bring me food whenever he ate,” she said. “But sometimes, when someone advises you something, it’s because they already know something is going to happen.”
The grief-stricken mother believes her son’s fate was written, despite her pleas. “It’s like they say, God always takes the best children.”
